CRI receives young students from L’Alouette school in Talca

A group of seven students, four professors and five parents visited the Center for Research and Innovation (CRI), where they learned about applied science in wine production.

As part of its mission to share their knowledge and experiences with the community, the Center for Research and Innovation (CRI) of Viña Concha y Toro received students from the L’Alouette school, who, with four to nine years, learned about the applications of science in the wine industry.

The day began with a presentation on the importance of plants for the ecosystem, where Felipe Gainza, Molecular Biology Researcher, explained its basic functions and structures, that allow life on the planet. Then, the group was divided into modules focused on the chemistry of the aromas and flavors of the grape, the health of the vine through the study of DNA and the process of wine production.



Gerard Casaubon, Director of the CRI, highlighted the vision that the children contributed about the scientific work and the study of the plants: “To recognize in them that capacity of amazement, that sometimes we adults lose, has a value for those of us who work at the CRI: Never stop dreaming or lose the capacity for amazement”.

Alejandra Salas, director of the academic project L’Alouette in Talca, emphasized the shared values ​​between the CRI and the school: “We have in common the preponderant role of science. L’Alouette proposes to generate a constant learning process that we call “Think, plan and do it”. This is a process that guides to early scientific development, to create on the basis of empirical knowledge. We understand knowledge in science, as that state to which humanity has come through constant research”.




The director also thanked the CRI for opening these initiatives, which seek to share the work done in the center with the nearby community. “It is an initiative really worth promoting, highlighting and thanking”, she said.

For his part, Gerard Casaubon recalled that a primary objective of the center is its constant connection with the community: “It was not chance to be geographically where we are and, therefore, we assume our leading role. These types of activities allow us to demonstrate that leadership with concrete actions that benefit our community. “

At the end of the activity, the students drew their experience at the CRI, reflecting their vision on the things that surprised them or liked the most.
